The form rejects your overseas number.

You are trying to reserve a hotel, restaurant, activity, or ticket before arriving in Japan. The form accepts only a Japanese-style number, and online advice says to enter your hotel number.

The short answer

Do not use a hotel, friend's, public, or made-up number until you know what the service does with it. First check whether the number is used for contact, authentication, or delivery of a device-bound electronic ticket.

Run this three-part check

1 · Contact only

The venue may call about lateness, closure, allergies, or a booking problem. Use your own overseas number if the form accepts it. If it does not, ask the venue what overseas guests should enter.

2 · SMS or phone authentication

The service is checking that you control the number. A hotel number, public SMS inbox, or borrowed number is not a safe substitute and may block later login or recovery.

3 · Electronic ticket or device binding

The number may be tied to the phone that displays the ticket. Confirm supported numbers and devices before paying. A successful purchase does not guarantee that the ticket can be opened later.

Clues visible on the page

  • 認証, SMS認証, 電話番号認証 means the number is used for verification.
  • 確認コード, ワンタイムパスワード means a confirmation code or one-time password may be sent.
  • 電子チケット, アプリで受取 means you must check ticket-app and device requirements.
  • A note requiring the same number at registration, download, or entry means the number is part of the ticket identity.
  • A plain 連絡先 field may be contact-only, but the operator's instructions still control.

Why ticket forms need extra care

Ticket Pia describes phone-number authentication as confirming that the registered number is yours, and may request it during registration, purchase, login, ticket receipt, or resale. Lawson Ticket states that some electronic tickets must be used on the smartphone whose number was entered at application, and that a mismatch can prevent ticket receipt.

Those are examples, not a rule for every booking site. Always read the specific event and platform page because requirements can vary by ticket and organiser.

What to do instead of guessing

  1. Look for an official overseas or English booking route. It may use different account and phone requirements.
  2. Read the phone-field note and FAQ. Search the page for 認証, SMS, 電子チケット, and 海外.
  3. Ask the operator before paying. Confirm whether an overseas number works and whether the same number is needed later.
  4. For a contact-only hotel or restaurant field, ask permission before using an accommodation number. Confirm that the front desk can receive and relay a call for you.
  5. For tickets, verify the actual phone and app first. Do this before buying a non-refundable product.

Do not use these shortcuts

  • Do not use a public receive-SMS website or buy a verification code from a stranger.
  • Do not enter a made-up number. Another person may own it or receive an important call.
  • Do not borrow a number when the ticket or account must remain tied to your own device.
  • Do not assume every voice-enabled SIM is supported. Check the platform and the specific plan before purchase.
