MIA · THREE YEARS IN JAPAN

Finding her way through trains, food and new friendships

“Please use Google Maps—it’s a big help. And always have an umbrella, just in case.”

Mia came to Japan three years ago. It was her first time travelling abroad and living away from home. The move took around five months, with support from her embassy and employer.

She found the adjustment positive: good food, friendly people and new friendships made through social events. One of the biggest changes was daily travel. She used to drive, but in Japan she learned to rely on trains—and on Google Maps.

She also discovered that finding food for a specific diet was easier than expected, with vegan restaurants and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Her most practical advice is simple: keep an umbrella with you, just in case.

ELI · FOUR YEARS IN JAPAN

The friends who helped Japan begin to feel like home

“Over time, I found good friends who helped me learn about Japanese culture and manage my life here.”

Eli came to Japan around four years ago and studied at a Japanese university. At first, the language, making friends and working out everyday things such as grocery shopping were all difficult.

Over time, she found good friends who helped her understand more about Japanese culture and manage daily life. Looking back, she feels that living in Japan has taught her not only about the country, but also about herself.

She is still learning—and looking forward to learning more.
